Annie Turnbo Malone: Queen of Black Hair History & the Path to Healthier Tresses

Dive into the vibrant history of Black haircare with Annie Turnbo Malone, a visionary entrepreneur who not only shaped the beauty industry but also empowered Black women.

1. The Pioneering Spirit of Annie Turnbo Malone:

In the late 19th century, Annie Turnbo Malone defied conventions to become a trailblazer in the beauty realm. As a true visionary, she recognized the need for specialized haircare for Black women, laying the foundation for the flourishing Black hair industry we know today.

Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone (August 9, 1877 – May 10, 1957) was an American businesswoman, inventor and philanthropist. In the first three decades of the 20th century, she founded and developed a large and prominent commercial and educational enterprise centered on cosmetics for African-American women.

Annie Malone's entrepreneurial spirit went beyond haircare; it extended to education and economic empowerment. Poro College, her brainchild, provided not just beauty education but also opportunities for Black entrepreneurs, fostering pride and self-sufficiency within the community.

3. Embracing Natural Beauty:

Annie Malone celebrated the diversity of Black beauty by championing natural hair. Her products were crafted to embrace and enhance the unique textures of Black hair, encouraging women to revel in their individuality.

She became a benefactor of the St. Louis Colored Orphans Home, where she served as president on the board of directors from 1919 to 1943. With her help, in 1922 the Home bought a facility at 2612 Goode Avenue, which was renamed Annie Malone Drive in her honor.
